Guided fishing trip with Capt. Steve Santucci!

The fishing yesterday was TOUGH!!! HOWEVER, Capt. Santucci wanted us to stay with top water all morning and that only yielded us 2 LMB.

We finally went to subsurface (11:30am) and by now the wind was picking up a bit so they boys did not fly cast AT ALL. He put us on swim baits and that produced 2 small stripers. We fished areas that he said produced BIG fish and that 20+ pounders are caught here all the time. We never got a bump in those spots. It was an off day for sure.

The places we fished looked really fishy and in some areas the depth was 8 to 14 feet. So at about 2pm I suggested to use fly for one of the boys. I cast for Matthew and he landed 1 striper.

At this time Michael had not caught a fish yet and he was fishing hard all day. So Michael came to the back of the boat with me and I cast the fly for him and he landed his first fish (small striper).

All that being said… I think Capt. Steve is an excellent guide. He is VERY friendly and a gentle man. We talked the entire trip, (I don’t like to talk!) and he was very complimenting about the boys.  The first stop we made he gave the boys top water lures and wanted them to walk the dog. They both made a cast and started walking the dog… like pros! Steve could not believe his eyes. He kept saying he can’t walk the dog any better than that. Of course the boys do that all the time here on the river so they know how to do that.

Anyway, back to Steve. He also fishes top water for a long time. He said the big fish crash top water baits all morning long. He also likes be in 30-40 feet of water and cast to a shelf on the bank. He said that is why he gets so many big fish because of the deep water so close by.

We did not fish Discovery Bay like I wanted. We left the dock and drove about a half an hour before we stopped in a slough that he said he landed two 5 pound LMB last week. Matthew got one there and that was it. We then headed to Franks Tract and then to False River then to Brannon Island then to a side channel off the Sac. By now it was after 2 pm and he said he wanted to fish Broad but I told him that we can work our way back to the launch if he wants because I knew how far it was.

On the way back he sucked up a weed in his jet and it was not good. He had to get in the water to rake the weeds off the bottom of the grate. I have never seen a guy do that before!

Overall it was a great learning experience and I got a lot of info on San Luis too. He is a super nice guy and I’m glad I got to spend the day with him.

BTW, have you ever seen so much STUFF on the water?????!!!! I’ve NEVER seen it that bad.
